Located on the Ross River, Townsville, home to
James Cook University's Townsville campus, is Australia’s largest tropical city, and an important commercial and administrative centre and port. Townsville’s population is around 160,000 and is growing rapidly. The city’s airport, casino, international 5-star Sheraton Hotel, university and cathedral make the city a focal point of the northern Queensland lifestyle. It is proudly an industrial city and serves as an important centre for the surrounding mining, minerals processing, agricultural and pastoral industries. It is also home to a large army and airforce base and is the headquarters of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Magnetic Island is just off shore and is an idyllic island suburb and national park for Townsville. It’s rocky coves, sheltered beaches and rich variety of wildlife make it a regular weekend retreat.
