Description of International and Development Studies

International and Development Studies
The two-year International and Development Studies degree program offers a broad multidisciplinary introduction to regions of the world as they emerge as areas of vital political and economic importance to Canada. At present, the Associate of Arts degree in International and Development studies focuses mostly on Latin America.

Because of our current focus on Latin America, the International and Development Studies program would be a good choice if you have a specific interest in that region. It will set you up well if you're intending to visit Latin America, do church or aid work there, or if you're thinking of expanding your business there. As a graduate of this program, you might pursue a career in areas such as journalism, community relations, translation, international development work, the travel industry, diplomacy, government, or international trade and commerce. Our program will also suit you if you have an interest in developing countries and development studies or if you're thinking about a general program of university transfer studies.

If you want to find out more about International and Development Studies, you can make an information request below and the school will contact you with further information.

Application and qualification

Our program operates under the Associate of Arts degree program, so you need to apply for and meet the entrance requirements for this program. There are two options for admission. If you are applying straight from high school, follow option one. If you have attended some post-secondary school, follow option two.

Option one: high school graduation only
1. B.C. Secondary school graduation or equivalent and
2. A minimum of a B average in English 12 and two other provincially examinable grade 12 subjects.

Option two: university entrance
You will need a minimum of nine university-level credits complete with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on all universitylevel credits attempted.

Check out our online calendar at www.ufv.ca/calendar and read the
International and Development Studies section carefully. You will be applying to the Associate of Arts program. From our website you can go to the download centre and download the application form. Fill it out and submit it, along with the required documents and the 45 dollar application fee (the 45 dollar will be waived for current UFV General Arts/Arts Studies students) to the Admissions and Records office at any UFV campus or centre or through the internet at www.pas.bc.ca.

If you want to start your studies in September, you should submit your application to UFV starting October 1. Alternately, if you're thinking about starting in January, the submission date is August 1. Admission will be on a competitive basis and meeting the minimal requirements does not guarantee your admission. If you meet all the entrance requirements but the program is full, you will be given an opportunity to register in Arts Studies.

Volunteer work experience

In your second year of the program, you will spend one semester doing on average three hours volunteer work each week. The activities may include community education, or working with non-governmental and church groups involved in international issues.

It may be possible to arrange employment opportunities for you in other countries if you have taken the appropriate language courses.

Expenses

It's best to consult the UFV calendar at www.ufv.ca/calendar for tuition fees, keeping in mind that new fees are usually set in May. You should also visit the UFV Financial Aid and Awards office, which facilitates the disbursement each year of about $12 million in federal and provincial student loans, grants, bursaries, scholarships, and awards to UFV students. A helpful budget planning worksheet is available online at www.ufv.ca/fineaid/budget.
