Description of International Relations

International RelationsInternational Relations

International Relations is the academic study of important issues and problems, which result from patterns of behaviour at an international level. These issues span a growing area and include political, economic, military, technological, cultural and environmental problems. In order to grasp a better understanding of such issues and problems, the courses are designed to help students in developing their own unique perspectives by combining theoretical knowledge with basic contemporary approaches to political analysis. Apart from international relations courses, the department also provides a comprehensive set of courses on business, international organisations, law, history, economics and special courses designed to enhance analytical thinking. The Balkan, Central Asian and Middle East countries are covered within an international world-wide perspective and special emphasis is placed upon Turkey and Cyprus in historical perspective. While the programme aims to provide a powerful insight to global developments, it also fosters a critical awareness of events related to Turkey and Cyprus.

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus

Wherever you travel in North Cyprus, the history comes alive...
For nine thousand years, Cyprus has been a melting pot of great civilisations; from the Neolithic settlements on the northern coast to the Egyptian, Persian, Roman, Venetian, Ottoman and British Empires. Its strategic location at the cross-roads of East and West has bestowed on the island with a rich and colourful history spanning centuries.

During the course of its vibrant past, the island has been visited by the Romans, Alexander the Great and Richard the Lion Heart, to name a few, each leaving its own unique footprint.

Cyprus Today
The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus (TRNC) was formally established in 1983 and today the island remains divided.   The TRNC is a fully democratic state and peace subsists across both sides of the island.  On 23 April 2003, the borders between the North and South were opened and it is now also very easy to get around, making North Cyprus a truly excellent destination for those who dream of a holiday steeped in history.
