Description of History MA

History MA
The University of Bristol offers a History MA programme. This programme enables participants to gain an MA by concentrating on one of three areas of specialization: Medieval and Early Modern History; Contemporary History; or Empires (focusing on the histories of colonialisms and their legacies). It is also possible to take a non-specialist route through the MA by selecting from a broad range of options. All MAs provide a thorough training in the basic skills of historical research, drawing on Bristol's standing as a centre of excellence in all these three core areas. This course is therefore suitable both for those seeking to continue their studies at masters level and for students seeking to acquire the skills needed for further postgraduate research.

If you want to find out more about History MA, you can make an information request below and the school will contact you with further information.

Application and qualification

The University of Bristol has a country-specific A to Z index which will help you decide if you are suitably qualified.

Postgraduate applications must be sent directly to the University. Some programmes can be applied for online, but all programmes can still be applied for by post too.

If English is not your first language, or you do not have an internationally recognized English qualification, you will need to provide evidence of your English language ability.
Applicants whose first language is not English are required to either:

- achieve a satisfactory standard in an University-approved test in English (usually a minimum score of 6.5 in all bands in the UCLES/British Council International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) examination) OR

- offer a degree from a British university.

Exemptions may be granted to students where there is clear alternative evidence of an acceptable standard of English.

Description of Bristol

Bristol

Bristol University bristol
Bristol, home to the University of Bristol, is a multicultural city of balloons and kites, clubs and DJs, festivals and carnivals, architecture and park land, business and new technology, theatres and museums, artists and animators, music and film. It has been officially designated a 'Centre of Culture' and a 'Science City' by the Government. In 2008, Bristol was given the European City of the Year Award by the Academy of Urbanism.

Its name comes from the Old English Brycgstow, meaning the place at the bridge. That's still a good description, and not just because of Brunel's renowned Clifton Suspension Bridge. Bristol is a bridge to culture, experiences, landscapes, careers – and the future.

Bristol has a history of innovation, creativity, exploration and risk taking:

- John Cabot sailed from here in 1497 on his historic voyage to Newfoundland.

- Isambard Kingdom Brunel built the Great Western Railway from London to Bristol in the 1830s.

- The foundations of solid-state physics were laid here in the 1930s by Nevill Mott and his team.

- The first public performance of the first stage work by Harold Pinter (The Room) was held here in 1957.

- The band Portishead recorded the groundbreaking Dummy album here (parts of it were recorded in the Music Department's Victoria Rooms) in 1993.

- Banksy, the Bristol-born renowned street artist and 'trickster', began his career here.

- The Internet Movie Database is largely run from here by its co-founder and managing director, Col Needham.
