Gujarat University has developed phenomenally to be recognized as a premier University in the country.

Gujarat University is the largest and the oldest University of the State of Gujarat and caters to the needs of a large number of rural, semi-urban and urban students. The University was established in 1949. Since then many other universities have been created in the State by carving out the areas under the jurisdiction of the University in order to meet the regional aspirations. However, Gujarat University continues to remain the largest university of the State providing higher education to over 200,000 students. The University has 235 affiliated colleges and around 225 Post-Graduate Centres to impart post-graduate courses in areas/faculties such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology, Management etc. The teaching and non-teaching staff of the University is dedicated to the cause of education.

Gujarat University is an affiliated University at the undergraduate level, while it is a teaching one at the postgraduate level. Indeed, the responsibility for postgraduate instruction has been statutorily given to the University and accordingly it has evolved a plan of co-ordinated instruction under the direct control and supervision of the University so as to ensure efficient and diversified instruction.

An important feature of this University is the system of external examinations in the Faculties of Arts and Commerce, both and under-graduate and post-graduate levels. The external examinations were introduced with a view to enabling working students and the others who could not afford the high cost of university education to realize their dream.

Gujarat University has developed phenomenally in the last 57 years to be recognized as a premier University in the country today. Gujarat University is engaged in various Post Graduate Programmes at the University Departments apart from the regular courses taught in the pure subjects. These programmes are interdisciplinary in nature and focus on the present needs of the students and the job prospects at the regional and national level.
