Bachelor of European Studies - English programme

The European Studies programme (HEBO) prepares students for an international career as a policy consultant or communications expert.

Across Europe, there is a huge demand for linguists and professionals who understand and are able to handle cultural differences. Throughout this four-year European Studies programme, you will be taught in three modern European languages. In addition to English, students can choose German, French or Spanish.

To supplement your language knowledge, you will be given ample opportunity to work on improving your communication skills. For example, you will learn how to conduct interviews, give oral presentations and write business letters.

During the first two years of your the European Studies programme, you will take subjects in intercultural communication, logic and reasoning, economics, Dutch and European law, marketing and ICT. You will naturally also learn about European culture and politics.

During your third and fourth years, you will be required to specialise in one of the following areas:
- Communication Management (CM)
- Management and Policy (BB)

As most of the regular programme of European Studies is taught in the Dutch language, we regret that students who do not have a thorough command of Dutch (at least NT2 level is required) cannot be enrolled as full-time students in this course. Please note that some classes are taught in English, for which a good command of the English language is required (TOEFL 550 or a 213 computer-based score; IELTS 7.0).

This programme of study provides plenty of scope for acquiring overseas experience. In your third year of study, you will spend six months at an international institute, while in your fourth year you will spend a semester undertaking an international work placement. In total, you will spend a quarter of your study outside the Netherlands.

Masters in European Studies

EUR 1,620 for EU-students (tuition fee 2009-2010).

EUR 6,800 for non-EU/EER students (tuition fee 2009-2010).

A limited number of grants are available for talented non-EU/EER students. Students who want to receive this Zuyd Excellence Scholarship, amounting to EUR 4,000, can apply for such a grant through the faculty of their choice.
