Description of Economics and Business Economics

Economics and Business Economics
What are the economic consequences of expanding the EU? Why do Dutch firms open up subsidiaries in China? Why is a cheap dollar great when you are planning a holiday in the United States, but quite a problem for an exporting company? What are the effects of technological developments and infrastructure investment on economic growth?

The bachelor Economics and Business Economics (E&BE) will help you encounter these and other questions. This three-year Bachelor's degree programme will teach you to sum up and assess the pros and cons of economic problems. You will be able to place political, societal or business discussions on development that may be controversial into a scientific framework.

Economics and Business Economics is perfect for students who want to rise to the challenge of seeing beyond the obvious: who want to be international in their outlook and learn to analyze economics and business developments during their studies. Students who will end up holding positions at multinational companies in order to investigate how that company will fare in a given country, students who can explain to national and international organizations how to respond to regional laws and customs. These students will discover that smaller businesses and organizations are also increasingly operating internationally and are in search of this information.

Economics and Business Economics Programme Content

Your first year of E&BE will provide you with the fundamentals of Economics and Business Economics, like microeconomics and macroeconomics, international marketing, financial accounting, international economics, finance and international business.

In the courses of international business and marketing you learn about enterprises that operate in the international market and their market strategies. What strategy design devices are most effective in a (multi)national enterprise and how are they affected by changes in the environment of the enterprise such as globalization? What is the best strategy especially when you want to operate at highly competitive international markets? Marketing is all about getting to know the wishes and desires of your customers. You learn to translate these wishes into the marketing mix - product policy, price setting, distribution and promotion.

After your first year, you choose one of the two specializations: Economics or International Economics & Business. If you specialize in Economics, you will be trained to become a qualified Economist, with a broad theoretical background and the skills to apply that theory in practice.

If you choose International Economics & Business, you choose a career as an economist with a strongly international profile and a focus on the issues from international economics and business strategy. Although the International Economics & Business (IE&B) specialization is rooted in economics, it does not restrict itself to this. It makes extensive use of the teaching in the business section, and in fact shares a limited number of courses with its sister programme in International Business (IB).

Both in Economics and in International Economics and Business you will have the opportunity to spend a period of six months abroad, taking economics and business courses (mostly electives of your own choosing) at a foreign university. The Faculty of Economics and Business has excellent international contacts. Cooperation takes place with partner institutions throughout Europe, as well as in countries outside Europe. The programme is rounded off by writing a bachelor thesis.

A Bachelor of Science in Economics and Business Economics gives you access to a number of Master's degree programmes at the Faculty of Economics and Business, like Economics, International Economics and Business, Business Administration and International Business and Management. With an international master, you will qualify for positions in multinational firms, governmental institutions or international organizations, or as an analyst with a research institute or university. With a degree in Economics, you are highly versatile because you were taught to look at the world in a logical, analytical and economic way. One possible job area is the banking world, where you would research the impact of proposals in the monetary field and advise on the desirability of particular measures. The government sector also employs many economists in an advisory and/or policy role and managerial positions. When you apply for the Research Master you can choose a career in academia and carry out doctoral research at a university.

Once you have been awarded your PhD, you can continue working at the university as a researcher and lecturer. The teacher training in Economics and Business Studies offers job opportunities not only as a teacher, but in any combination of education and economics, for example as a designer, instructor, coach, presenter or researcher.
