EU-Russian Studies Master degree

The two year inter-disciplinary EU-Russian Studies Master degree combinines political science, economics, law, history, linguistics and cultural studies. The integrated programme binds together the study of two main regions - Europe and Russia - in one coherent curriculum, providing a comprehensive understanding of political, social, and economic developments in the EU and its member states as well as in Russia and its neighbouring transition countries.

General admission requirements

1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent (at least 3 years of studies at a higher educational institution).

2. English language requirement: International applicants for whom English is not a native language need to provide proof of English language proficiency. One of the following is accepted: TOEFL - 550 or higher, computer based 213, internet based 79/80; IELTS - 6,5; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English - C; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - B.

Application process

1. Submit the online application from
http://ec.ut.ee/studies.

2. Mail the application form with all the necessary documents by indicated deadline to: International Students Service, University of Tartu, Ülikooli 18, Tartu 50090, Estonia.

3. All applicants will receive confirmation upon receipt of their application and its status. Complete applications will be considered by the Admission Commission and students accepted to the programme will be notified immediately.

Documents to be submitted

1. Application form for Master's studies (included letter of motivation);

2. Copy of the Bachelor diploma (or highest preceding study level) and diploma supplement (transcript/grade list) in the original language certified by the educational institution issuing the document or a notarized copy;

3. Official translation of the diploma and diploma supplement into English, translation certified;

4. Non EU applicants: copy of the upper secondary school certificate with a transcript/grade list and official translation of upper secondary school certificate (with a transcript/grade list) into English (both documents certified);

5. Official test results of English language proficiency;

6. Copy of the valid identification document.

Study at Estonia's national university – the University of Tartu

The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, undoubtedly is Estonia's leading center for science, research and education. Names of many prominent scientists are connected to the University of Tartu: Friedrich Georg Wolhelm von Struve, the first astronomer to calculate the distance of a start from the Earth; Karl Ernst von Baer, the founding father of Embriology and teh discoverer of mammalian ovum; Friedrich Wilhelm Ostawald, the Nobel Prize winner (1909). Since 1999, UT has been part of the European Union Socrates and Erasmus higher education programmes, in the framework of which almost 400 cooperation agreements have been signed with universities around Europe. In addition to that the University of Tartu has signed bilateral cooperation agreements with more than 40 universities from 14 countries.

For the first time, the University of Tartu has been ranked among the top 5% of world’s leading universities in the reputable Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings.

"Being among the top five per cent of world’s leading universities is a recognition to our university," said UT Rector Alar Karis, expressing his pleasure. "I believe it will be an influencing factor in the young people’s choice of education, encouraging them to study at the University of Tartu," he added.

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), there are 12,000 universities in the world. From among those 12,000, the top five per cent are selected.

The ranking system takes into account surveys of academics and employers, ratio of students and teaching staff, the number of citations in research publications and the number of international teaching staff and students. This year 9,386 academics (47% more than in 2008) and 3,281 employers (40% more than in 2008) responded to the surveys..
