University of Horticulture and Forestry provides teaching facilities in horticulture, forestry and allied sciences.

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry has earned a unique distinction not only in the country but also in whole of Asia to impart teaching, research and extension education in horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines with a Himalayan perspective. Its milestones in teaching, research and extension education have strengthened the path of sustainable development of horticulture and forestry in Himachal Pradesh and have further presented a model of prosperity for eco-conscious development before the Indian Himalayan states and the entire region of Hindu Kush Himalayas.

One of the mandates of the University of Horticulture and Forestry is to provide teaching facilities in horticulture, forestry and allied sciences under a mountain perspective of Himachal Pradesh. Similar to other State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), the university also follows the course credit system of student’s education under bifurcation of annual academic session into two semesters. Each semester is spread over a duration of 19 weeks along with short duration semester breaks of six weeks each. During semester breaks educational tours and field trainings are organized to expose students to different farming situations.

University_of_Horticulture_and_Forestry1University of Horticulture and Forestry offers UG (B.Sc.) and PG (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) courses in the fields of Horticulture, Forestry and its allied sciences including M.B.A. in Agri-Business.

The Directorate of Extension Education of the University of Horticulture and Forestry is the nodal authority to plan, organize, coordinate and evaluate the extension education programs of the University through the main campus at Nauni, Solan, Regional Horticultural Research Stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, which are located in different agro-climatic zones of Himachal Pradesh. It aims at transfer of improved technology to the farmers, orchardists, NGOs and personnel of development departments on fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, flowers and medicinal and aromatic plants, beekeeping, forestry, agro forestry and allied fields.

The technology transfer mechanism is more challenging and complex for mountain terrains as compared to their counterpart plain areas. The mountain specificities such as inaccessibility, remoteness, geo-ecological diversity, fragility and human adaptation mechanism demand close scrutiny and in depth understanding of underlying socio-ecological interactions of mountain communities.
