Course of Contemporary Landscape - Visual Research and Design
Objectives
Master’s
Degree in Contemporary Landscape: Visual Research and Design aims to
create a new professional that combines aesthetic and theoretical
skills related to contemporary art with the technical and practical
skills related to architecture and urban planning. The emergence and
rapid spread of the metropolitan system has produced a series of
extraordinary transformations of the very idea of landscape: from the
new natural-artificial relationship, to the idea of an archeology of
the contemporary, from the grandiose systems of self-building in the
ghettos around the world, to the so-called temporary cities that host
major ephemeral events, limited in time.
The
interpretation of these relatively recent microscopic and macroscopic
phenomena requires a new professional competence, able to analyze them
from a theoretical and historical perspective as well as to implement
practical projects according to a new vision for the territory. The
Contemporary Landscape Designer will therefore know how bring together
both esthetic and functional changes of a world that is increasingly
being defined more precisely by the term glocal: associated to
historical and local values and traditions, but at the same time
inevitably cast in a global and all-encompassing context.
A
central element of the very idea of landscape transformation throughout
the twentieth century has been the indissoluble link to contemporary
visual and performing arts that have contributed to designing a new
vision of all the contexts of modern living: from Land Art to
Photography, from Site-Specific works to Situationism from Soundscape
to Bodyscape. This Master’s degree therefore aims to create a cross
professionalism that combines deep aesthetic competence, based
precisely on the specifics of the visual and performing arts in the
landscape, with a strong and innovative design capability in action.
In
this context, the choice to implement this type of Master’s Degree in
Rome becomes a fundamental advantage, because the city itself is a
highly emblematic symbol: an esthetic witness of the history of art for
well over two millennia, but at the same time a modern and lively
contemporary metropolis in constant transformation. The city is
therefore the ideal base for experimentation and research in the career
of the contemporary landscape designer.
Program
This
Master’s Degree expands on two types of closely related instruction:
one, theoretical lectures that give the students historical-critical
training on the concept of contemporary landscape, having as a
reference either architecture and urban planning or visual and
performing arts; and two, laboratory lectures in which to develop a
project in the territory which in turn will be developed in two phases:
one dedicated to field research on the site or to the project in the
laboratory, and the other dedicated to the design of the same project
from a rational and practical perspective.
The
project is arranged with a Roman organization or a local entity so as
to let the students participate in an experience as real and
educational as possible. The work is managed from the outset by setting
up project work groups among the students, creating real work scenarios
as much as possible, and giving students the opportunity to further
specialize in the path they have already undertaken in their previous
university careers, while also giving them the chance to encounter and
compare other skills and professional competences.
