Bachelors in Economics and Finance

financeThe Bachelor in Economics and Finance (BEF) at Charles University is a three-year programme taught fully in English offered for students with a complete secondary education. This programme is taught at the Faculty of Social Sciences by members of the  Institute of Economic Studies (IES).

The Bachelor in Economics and Finance (BEF) aims to give the student a thorough grounding in both theoretical and applied economics and finance. Emphasis is placed on developing abstract analytical reasoning, which allows graduates to solve complex economic and financial problems in various settings.

Compulsory modules in Bachelor in Economics and Finance:

  • Principles of Economics I & 2
  • Microeconomics I & 2
  • Macroeconomics I & 2
  • Mathematics I & 2
  • Statistics
  • Econometrics
  • Bachelor Thesis Seminar I & 2

Education courses within the Bachelor in Economics and Finance are taught both by IES faculty and external professionals from the central bank, commercial banks and business analysts. Graduates typically assume challenging positions in banking, consulting, investment funds and public administration.

To complete the programme, the students must (i) collect 180 ECTS credits, (ii) defend their Bachelor’s Thesis and (iii) pass the final comprehensive examination.

Suitability and application

Students wishing to study the Bachelor in Economics and Finance programme must meet the following requirements:

  • Have already completed (or are about to complete) their secondary education. Applicants who have completed their secondary education abroad should note that it will be necessary for them to obtain an official document to say that their secondary education is recognised in the Czech Republic (so-called "nostrifikace").
  • Sufficient knowledge of English to attend classes and write papers in the English language. Applicants who are not native speakers will be required to present the results of either IELTS (required minimum is 6 points) or TOEFL (required minimum is 75 points) or equivalent (eg. FCE).
  • Sufficient mathemathical training to be built upon in this programme. Applicants will be required to present either official documents (eg. reports) from their secondery schools showing the extent of their mathemathical training and their grading in it or results of some  standardized admission test to colleges and universities with mathematical part (eg. SAT).

Expenses

School fees for the BEF programme in school year 2011/12 are 3,000 Euro per semester.
