Wits' 4-year, full-time Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering focuses on the design, planning, operation, construction, and maintenance of physical infrastructure. Civil engineering itself is the improvement and maintenance of the built environment of today's world in an effort to enhance the quality of life for people now and in the future. Facilities where civil engineers work to improve are waste and water management facilities, structures and public buildings, and transportation and communications.
The first 2 years of the Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering concentrates on improving students' skills in computing, mathematics, communication, engineering design/ problem-solving, and science. For the next 2 years, study includes hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, infrastructure planning and management, construction materials, and structural engineering.
Upon completion of the Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering, graduates are well-prepared to launch successful careers in the field of civil engineering, or may continue their studies toward a graduate degree.
