Description of Bachelor of Law

The study of Law develops abilities that are widely valued throughout society. The subject teaches precision of thought, analytical skills and accuracy of expression, and enables you to understand the formal structures of our society. It gives you the opportunity to examine cases where legal matters and perspectives combine with historical, philosophical and sociological ones. As well as being an academic discipline worthy of study in its own right, Law at Edinburgh will enable you to progress towards entrance to the Scottish legal profession. Studying law will equip you with knowledge of general legal principles and legal techniques, giving you a vital introduction to the practice of law.

    All applicants, regardless of the programme applied for, must have a strong academic record and must have achieved (or be predicted to achieve) the minimum academic qualifications required for the degree.

    You should also demonstrate in your application a clear commitment and motivation for further study and a strong interest in your chosen subject.

    In addition to the stated minimum entry requirements, all SQA and GCE students must also hold Standard Grade and GCSE qualifications, as outlined below, for admission to each of the Colleges.

    Where students have taken an SQA Intermediate qualification in place of Standard grade 3 we require grade A at Intermediate 1 or grade C at Intermediate 2.

    Humanities & Social Science:5* RAE grades were obtained in Islamic Studies, English Literature, German and Scandinavian Studies and Philosophy with Grade 5s in Linguistics, English Language, Psychology, Law, Anthropology, Sociology, Accounting, Asian Studies, Celtic Studies, French, Hispanic Studies, History and Divinity. The English Literature department is the oldest in the world (200 years old) and home to the James Tait Memorial Prize, the oldest UK literary prize.
