Description of Bachelor of Fine Arts

Bachelor of Fine Arts
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree is the perfect goal for creative individuals who want to explore the possibilities of art-making, both technically and conceptually. In this four-year program, you will receive a sound educational foundation, and gain an understanding of how studio practices and academic theory complement each other in today's artistic landscape. A BFA will prepare you not only to make art, but also to understand the complex relationship between art and contemporary culture.

UFV is proud to offer the Fraser Valley's first Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This four-year Visual Arts major is a dynamic and interdisciplinary program incorporating art history, studio art, and critical theory. Students are given the tools for contemporary art practice through a curriculum that is sensitive to the social and political issues that affect art practices today. Interactive experiences such as gallery tours, visiting artists, lectures, and exhibition opportunities enhance classroom and studio education.

The design of this program matches the needs and desires of our students as emerging artists. You will be able to fine-tune this degree so it best suits you and your educational and career goals. The UFV Visual Arts faculty members are committed to high standards of achievement for students, and enhance their teaching with their own experiences in professional art practice. Well-designed studios and a dynamic professional teaching faculty make our department a highly informative and encouraging place to study visual art.

Fine Arts careers

Your fine arts degree can lead to many options in the creative marketplace. In addition to establishing a professional art practice, you might work in one of the many related arts fields, such as teaching art, owning an art gallery, or working as a curator or art critic. You might also choose a career in a commercial art field such as illustration, animation, art direction, photojournalism, or commercial photography. A BFA is also the first step to a Master of Fine Arts degree, which would prepare you to pursue advanced artistic research, or teach art at the college level.
