Description of Bachelor in International Law

Bachelor in International Law
The Bachelor in International Law programme is an international Final Year designed for students who pursue an international professional career as a legal expert in a public or private organization dealing with and advising on legal aspects of international (business) relations, in order to comply with international regulation, policy rules and codes.

In an increasingly globalizing world, organisations (either profit or non-profit) have to take various legal and policy issues and contemporary developments into account. Issues like sustainability, social responsibility, fair trade, emerging economies and good governance are becoming more and more important. This puts an extra effort on experts that work in this international environment. This final year programme offers an opportunity for international students (EU and non-EU) to learn to deal with international business challenges, experience inter cultural differences and develop new approaches to international cooperation in the business and public domain taking important legal and society issues into account.

The Bachelor in International Law has been created either for students that have completed three years of higher education in Laws and wish to finish their four year bachelor programme with an international specialization or for students that already have their bachelor degree in Laws and wish to receive an additional (internationally acknowledged) Dutch bachelor degree in Laws by completing this international Final year.

The programme offers good opportunities to develop relevant professional competencies like negotiating, advising, project management, inter cultural communication, doing research and translating legal knowledge into practical solutions. The courses contain a broad variety of lectures and workshops.

As part of the Bachelor in International Law programme you will be working on practical assignments for business and government. Learning by doing is a concept we believe in: a real life assignment not only motivates students but it also enables them to learn in a more effective way. This will enhance your skills in analyzing and solving legal problems in the field of international cooperation and business relations. Assignments may concern issues like: integrity in public contracting, legal advice on international business expansion, comparative research on the establishment of legal entities, cross border law enforcement or legal issues concerning the European internal market.

On successful completion of he Final year students will receive the internationally acknowledged degree of LLB (Bachelor in Laws).

Application and qualification

Before you can be admitted to this degree course you need to have a secondary school certificate and a minimum of three years of higher education in Law

Do you have a foreign degree?
In this case the Saxion will determine the value of your secondary certificate and compare it to the Dutch certificate to determine its level. It should be the equivalent of the Dutch certificate of secondary education, e.g. the German Abitur (allgemeine Hochschulreife), the Britisch GCE A-levels or GSCE grades A, B or C, the French baccalaureat, or the American High School (top stream or plus 1 year of college). Secondly Saxion will determine whether your further study is the equivalent to three years of Dutch higher education. If both of these equal the Dutch entry requirements, you can be admitted to the course.

All students who wish to start this final year need to have a good command of English (IELTS 6.0 or similar).
