Description of BSc Development Economics

BSc_Development_EconomicsBSc Development Economics is a three-year singlesubject degree. It provides a thorough grounding in economic theory and analysis, with an emphasis on the economics of developing countries.

While introductory units in Economics are followed in Year 1, students in Years 2 and 3 at the BSc Development Economics program take more specialised courses dealing with economic development, as well as courses focusing on specific regions in Asia and Africa. No preliminary knowledge of the subject or of any region is required.

Application:
Students that want to apply for an undergraduate education at SOAS must apply through the UK's central universities application organization, UCAS. An application form and details of courses can be found on their website: www.ucas.ac.uk.

Students can apply through UCAS from the September in the year prior to when you wish to start e.g. you can apply for September 2010 entry from September 2009. Applicants should send in their application by the main closing date of 15 January. Applications received after this date may still be considered, but early application is strongly advised.

School of Oriental and African StudiesThe School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), a University of London college, is the only Higher Education institution in the UK specialising in the study of Asia, Africa and the Near and Middle East.

SOAS has the largest concentration in Europe of academic staff concerned with Africa, Asia and the Middle East, combining language scholarship, disciplinary expertise and regional focus.

SOASStudents of the School of Oriental and African Studies have exclusive access to three residences:

1. Dinwiddy House, located on Pentonville Road adjacent to Vernon Square and a 20-minute walk from Russell Square

2. Paul Robeson House, located on Pentonville Road adjacent to Vernon Square and a 20-minute walk from Russell Square

3. Charles Morton Court in Stoke Newington, just over 30 minutes away by bus.

Each residence offers purpose-built, self-catering accommodation which features individual study-bedrooms with en-suite facilities, telephone and Internet cabling. Four to seven rooms are clustered around a shared kitchen/diner. Where possible, students at the School of Oriental and African Studies will be offered a choice of single or mixed sex rooms in clusters.
