The BA (Hons) Music Technology and Music Performance/Composition focuses on engaging students in the creative use of contemporary music technology systems. It builds their practical skills, as well as developing an informed technical understanding of how these systems work and how they are used in the production of today’s music.
The combined options are for those who are interested in working with audio and music technology but wish to study a broader range of subjects.
Level 4 acts as a foundation to help students develop a general base of skills and technical knowledge. At Level 5 students will be able to broaden their range of skills, develop their creative abilities and produce audio work to a high professional standard. Level 6 allows them considerable creative freedom and major opportunities to conceive, plan and realise significant audio projects.
Teaching methods
A combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials. Most programmes also include master classes with visiting lecturers and practitioners.
Learning materials
Module Study Guides and Course Handbooks will be provided. Access to Blackboard (TVU's Virtual Learning Environment) is also available where appropriate.
Student support
The University offers students a wide variety of support mechanisms. Service range from accommodation support through to special support for disabilities. Within the programme itself, academic support is provided through the means of the Learning Skills Development Scheme. With many programmes this is built into the programme through skills-based modules. In others, the scheme is provided by an additional lecture or workshop each week. Academic support is further provided through the allocation of a personal tutor, an academic member of staff from your programme of study.
Exams
All programmes within the Faculty are assessed through a variety of assessment methods. Written work is usually in the form of essays, presentations, critical self-reflections, learning journals, examinations etc. Practical assessment varies depending upon the nature of the practice, for example, videos in the case of video production, CD recordings for Music Technology, and even live broadcasts in the case of Radio Broadcasting. There are usually (but not always) at least two assignments for each module you take.
