The history of the University of Portsmouth dates back to 1870. Since the award of the first degree in 1900, the University has maintained its commitment to promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and research across its five faculties.

There are approximately 20,000 students studying a wide range of courses at the University, in the heart of Portsmouth’s city centre. Over 3,500 students come from approximately 100 countries, so you will be among friends from the start.

As well as a multicultural mix in the student body, the University employs many lecturers and researchers from overseas, making the University a real international community. The cultural societies include the Hong Kong Society, Afro-Caribbean Society, Chinese Society, Islamic Society, Hindu Society and the Malaysian Society among others.

Since becoming a University in 1992, the University of Portsmouth has grown rapidly. Multi-million pound investments have been made to provide state-of-the-art teaching and living accommodation in the city centre. Older buildings of historic interest, such as Park Building and Milldam, have been attractively refurbished and others have been extended. The University is committed to investing for the future of its students and to ensuring an excellent learning experience.

Portsmouth, home of the University of Portsmouth is an island city in the centre of England’s southern coastline between Bournemouth and Brighton. Its central, sheltered position and good travel links to other cities make Portsmouth a popular location to live, work and study.

Portsmouth is one of the country’s sunniest spots. The daily temperature is 20°C during the summer months, falling to an average of 12°C in winter. Rainfall is lower than the national average and snow is unusual.

The University quarter is in the heart of the city, making shopping, public transport and leisure facilities very convenient. Modern University buildings blend in with Portsmouth’s historic surroundings, such as the New Theatre Royal and the Guildhall.



All international (non EU) students are guaranteed a room in accommodation a the University of Portsmouth for their first year (for courses commencing in October), provided they have completed an accommodation booking form and paid an advance rent deposit of 200 British pounds by 1 September.

The halls of residence are either within walking distance of the University’s teaching facilities or are linked to the main campus by a free inter-site bus service. The University has many different styles of student rooms with the option of having meals provided (catered) or cooking for yourself (self-catered). Most rooms are en suite (private bathroom). All rooms have free internet access (broadband), plus phone lines that allow free internal telephone calls, voicemail facility and external calls using a prepayment card. Accommodation for postgraduate students and female only flats are also available at the University of Portsmouth.
