Description of BA (Hons) Digital Animation Specialist

BA (Hons) Digital Animation Specialist

This BA (Hons) Digital Animation Specialist provides the opportunity to study traditional animation principles using digital technology. Students will receive a thorough grounding in the principles of animation and will be encouraged to develop both creatively and technically. Students are expected to gain proficiency in a wide range of digital media to create their own unique style. Digital Animation covers a broad spectrum and is appropriate for those aspiring to start their own business, for those intending to apply for funding for their own projects and for those who wish to gain employment in the animation, film or broadcast industries.

Students are encouraged to develop their work for their intended medium, for example, games, the internet, film, TV and multimedia. Traditional animation skills are tailored to a diverse range of digital media. Students will gain experience in both 2D and 3D animation skills, reflecting the wide range of employment opportunities. Knowledge of the wider context of animation ensures that the programme is targeted appropriately to the industry.

The philosophy of this Digital Animation course is to gain an understanding of the animation process as a whole. Students will develop their own creativity and style and will also develop their own solutions through problem solving whilst developing their intellectual skills. Learning specific software skills are not enough in these days of fast changing technology. Students need to learn the software, but also need to learn how to learn, how to relate to different technologies and how to adapt and change as the world changes. Students also need solid foundations and key concepts that will transfer across any changes in technology or industry practices. For example, the ability to make a presentation or plan and manage a project, is a skill that will stay with you for life. Learn the principles of animation and you can apply those to any animation technology. This is a skill that will last a lifetime.

Academic support is further provided through the allocation of a personal tutor, an academic member of staff from your programme of study.

Exams
All programmes within the Faculty are assessed through a variety of assessment methods. Written work is usually in the form of essays, presentations, critical self-reflections, learning journals, examinations etc. Practical assessment varies depending upon the nature of the practice, for example, videos in the case of video production, CD recordings for Music Technology, and even live broadcasts in the case of Radio Broadcasting. On completion of the Digital Animation course it is expected that the student will demonstrate the following:

The ability to analyse and evaluate the options (creative and technical) in production of a digital animation in the complex and unpredictable environment of new media.

To be able to select and apply from a wide range of innovative or standard techniques, demonstrating a comprehensive knowledge of digital animation and a specific skill in their chosen area of specialisation.

Students will also have completed ’ real work’ eg professional briefs, mock commercial projects to prepare them for employment.

As the course progresses through from entry to graduation, students learn and develop their abilities to be reflective and self-critical; to be able to operate as autonomous and self-motivated learners; and to be able develop their own practice. By graduation, students will be capable of complex thought and critical self-analysis and be truly reflective practitioners in the field of Digital Animation. They will also be equipped to hone and update their skills in a rapidly changing subject area. Modules at all levels work toward these skills, but is it particularly at level 3 where each of the modules explicitly develops and examines these attributes of graduateness. The level three project modules (20 and 40 credits) are prime vehicles in this regard.

This Digital Animation course aims to equip students for a wide range of careers. This is an exciting time for animation as the number of openings is increasing. The course addresses the needs of convergent industries including broadcast and new media and has had recent success with a student competition at Channel 4. We actively encourage input from the industry. Dreamworks and Cosgrove Hall are instrumental in the continuing development of this course. Recent speakers include Dreamworks, Disney USA and Framestore amongst others.

Graduates of Digital Animation will also be ideally placed for further academic study, by progressing to masters level study on, for example, the MA in Computer Arts or the MSc in Interactive Software Development – (both offered by CT and both subject to interview and portfolio).
