On completion of a BA Major in Criminology, the graduate will have developed an understanding of Criminology and the related Minor subject to enable him/her pursue a career position with employers such as the police, probation service, civil service, the prison service and to pursue
further studies in their chosen profession or at a post graduate level. The graduate will have acquired the following knowledge, understanding and skills for Honours graduates as indicated in the QAA National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.
Honours degrees are awarded to students who have demonstrated:
An understanding of core aspects of the field of criminology including the acquisition of coherent and detailed knowledge of the main knowledge areas of the criminal justice system
An ability to use techniques of analysis and enquiry within the criminology discipline;
A conceptual understanding of criminology that enables the student to devise and sustain arguments, and/or to solve problems, using ideas and techniques;
An ability to describe and comment upon particular aspects of current research;
The ability to manage their own learning.,
Graduates will also be able to
Apply the methods and techniques that they have learned to review, consolidate, extend and apply their knowledge and understanding, and to initiate and carry out projects;
Critically evaluate arguments, assumptions, abstract concepts and data, to make judgements, and to frame appropriate questions to achieve a solution ? or identify a range of solutions ? to a problem;
Communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences orally and in written form;
And demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment requiring
the exercise of initiative and personal responsibility.
Career progression after Criminology with Law
This course is designed to integrate knowledge of both criminology and law, and is of practical relevance for those who wish to pursue careers in the courts, in law enforcement agencies, in the Prison Service and in the Probation Service. The opportunities available to graduates in these various areas are numerous. There are approximately 250,000 employees working in criminal justice agencies in the public sector, such as police, probation and prison officers, with a further 400,000 employed in private sector companies in the security industry. There is also wide scope for employment in the court system and the administration of justice.
