You will learn to formulate independently from the choice of media, whether it concerns digital, web-based media or analogue communication tools such as posters, magazines and other printed options.

The Art & Crossmedia Design Course

How do you design and create a functional, communicative product? This is the central issue of the Art & Crossmedia Design Course programme. Through theory, projects, and internal and external assignments, you will learn to think in terms of the communication concept, the message you wish to convey and the target group for whom this information is intended.

The course provides you with all the current software knowledge that you will require for graphic design, photography, interactive design, film and video. It includes Flash, HTML, InDesign, After Effects and Photoshop, which you will learn while working on creative assignments. In addition, you will receive group instruction about the latest techniques and the profession’s cultural background. The course develops an individual bias towards the end of the second year. This means that your curriculum will be geared towards you, as supervised by your teachers.

You will work on concepts that are fundamental to a design, whereby the contents and objective are gradually imbued with form during this process. In the second half of the third year, you will either work on professional assignments or be assigned a work placement. Even in professional practice, you will personally be able to define the content of your finals, which will either represent the conclusion of your course or act as a springboard to a Master’s programme.

3D/Photographic Design - This specialisation focuses on using the combination of typography and photography in communicative processes. Here, you will consider how photography is applied and the ways in which it can reinforce a communicative concept and create interaction.

3D/Urban Architecture - This specialisation concerns communication in the public space as based on the total experience of the space in question: from information pillars and other means of mobile communication right up to a complete architectural design.

4D/Film & Interactive Design - This specialisation concentrates on the use of time based and/or database driven media in communication. It consists of various media including animation, television, internet and film. For instance, you can learn to design not only the creative aspect of games but also
soundscapes and documentary scenarios.

Three Academies in the Netherlands

At ArtEZ Art & Design, everything focuses on art and design where we have different subject groups. Fine Art is the domain of the autonomous visual arts. Fashion & Product Design is the place for those particular professions. Media & Graphic Design comprises the courses that deal with the fields of communication, media and design. Then there is the area of Interior Architecture and Interior Design, which is now a part of the Faculty of Architecture. Finally we have Education in Art and Design, which collaborates with the other teacher training courses in the Interfaculty and with the Art Education Expertise Centre.

In its individual way, each subject group maintains an enterprising culture and international orientation. There are also an increasing number of international activities and foreign students. Various courses are now either bilingual (English/Dutch) or are taught entirely in English.

Together, the three ArtEZ Institute of the Arts academies in Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle offer an all-round educational programme with many choices. Each location has its own distinct “character” that reverberates through its syllabus, atmosphere and activities.
